February 25, 2015 Rebel wrestler Wyatt Lane (120) placed fifth at the Nebraska State Wrestling Meet. Spartan wrestler Bo Slingsby (138, 29-7) earned a fifth-place medal at the Nebraska State Wrestling Meet.

Loup City Schools received a $2,500 donation from Sherman County farmer Rick Kusek and the American Farmers Grow Communities sponsored by Monsanto.

The Mason City news reported Phyllis Zimmer will have Dr. Seuss Day at the Sunshine Library.

Mike Ference is selling 315 head of 500- to 800-pound black and black white face steers and heifers next Tuesday at the Loup City Commission, Co.

Dad Kevin Golus was pictured with his young daughter, Finley, at the Leap Into Learning Dad’s Night event.

The youth group of St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church theme for the year was “Team up to tackle hunger and poverty.” The youth group members went out in a snow storm to collect money and food at their meeting and raised $220.45 from parishioners. The money was donated to the Sherman County Food Pantry. Leaders of the group are Cindy Ference and Kay Einsphar.

Dennis Krolikowski, age seventy-four, was pictured donating blood at the Red Cross Bloodmobile visit. Arnie Augustyn earned his six gallon pin.

Lucas Obermiller earned a third-place medal at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament.

Loup City High School band members Elizabeth Glinsmann, flute; Katie Kowalski, tenor sax; and Ann Peterson, clarinet, were chosen to play in the 120 member Lou-Platte Honor Band.

Oren Obermiller and Velma Jackson were Rose Lane Home Valentine’s Day royalty. Everett Carder and Louise Walker were crowned the Sherman County Senior Center Valentine’s Day royalty.

Loup City High School speech team won the LouPlatte Conference Speech Contest. Gold medalists were Erica Butler in entertainment speaking and the OID team of Ann Peterson, Charley Loeffelbein, Maggie Mitteis and Reid McConnell. Loup City scored 109 points to win the trophy.

Tanner Palu rolled a 158 game and a 388 series to lead the Junior League action.

Chilewski LLP is selling sixty-nine 750- to 800-pound steers at the Tuesday Loup City Commission, Co. sale.

February 25, 1995

Harold Bals had a most unusual event happen at his farm. One of his Suffolk ewes gave birth to a set of twins the two-and-a-half days later gave birth to a second set of twins.

Father Miron Kopushar died Thursday at Rose Lane Home at age eighty-five. He had been a priest in the area since 1957 serving Loup City, Ashton, and Farwell and finishing his career as a chaplain at Sacred Heart Hospital.

The weather has been very “changeable,” with four days with highs in the twenties then two days later highs in the sixties.

Christy Kurtzhals finished fourth place in the ten-to-eleven-year-old bracket at the Knights of Columbus state free throw contest.

An ad announced the organizational meeting for the Rose Placzek bi-annual walleye tournament would be at JJ’s Boat Repair next Tuesday evening.

The Sherman County Bank is offering a 7.25 percent return on a special seven month C.D.

Sig Lewandowski and Esther Kusek were crowned Rose Lane Home Valentine’s Day king and queen.

Dan Flynn’s sixteen points led the boys’ team to a 78-57 win in sub-districts.

Loup City High School wrestling statistics showed Tim Obermiller, most wins, twenty-eight; Doug Setlik, most team points, 182; Kenny Martin, most take downs, thirty-eight; and Brian Jasnoch, most points scored in the season 187.

February 21, 1985

Mayor Jim Kuehl appointed Ed McCartney to the city council vacancy left by the resignation of Ken Loeffelbein. This is the second time McCartney is serving as an appointed member of the Loup City City Council.

Tracy Lambrecht sank nineteen of twenty- five free throws at the Ord district contest to advance to the state Elks Hoop Shoot.

Sherman County Surveyor Stan Moritz is putting down his “rod and transit” and retiring after serving Sherman County for forty-six years. Sherman County board president Wendell Glinsmann presented a special plaque to Moritz at a ceremony at Rose Lane Home where Stan now resides.

Mike Jarzynka advertised, “Work wanted. Will put up hay on shares or will do custom baling. Can apply preservatives.”

Mayor Jim Kuehl appointed and the council approved Jim Manker as the new Loup City building permit examiner. Allen Marquart was appointed to the Mason City Village Board to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Richard Sennett. Others on the Mason City Board are John Armstrong, Francis Standage, Danny Johnson, and Max Richerson. February 20, 1975 Beth Lonowski is circulating a petition around Sherman County to promote a constitutional amendment to make abortion illegal except in medical procedures to save the life of the mother.

Forty-six place holders in the Loup City Development Corporation and their guests met at the Colony Club Monday night for their annual meeting. Bill Bowness was elected 1975 president. Other officers and board members elected were Harry Knecht, K.B. McDonald, Alex Smedra, Bill Timm, Don Kaminski, LaVerne Bowness, Eldon Adams, and Jim Kuehl.

The Loup City FFA qualified the Dairy product team of Bill McDonald, Deb Quandt, and Roger Raymond and the Tractor Maintenance team of Robert Klausen and Dennis Griffiths for the state contest in April.

The Loup City High School speech team won the LouPlatte Conference Speech meet. First place honors were earned by Marsanne Jablonkski, poetry; Chris Turek and Julie Lindgren, original public address; Wendy Clark, after dinner speaking; and Connie Kulwicki, interpretation of poetry.

Several area banks had ads in the paper offering a 6.50 percent return on a one year CD.

February 25, 1965

Harry Waskowiak prevented a large fire Saturday morning when he went to the ASCS office building for some papers. He found the room filled with smoke when he opened the door. The Loup City Fire Department found the furnace had become overheated after an automatic blower had quit working.

The Raiders are now 15-3 after a 66-55 win over Fullerton. The team had lost three in a row starting with the loss in the LouPlatte Basketball Tournament. Rich Guzinski was high scorer with twenty-one points.

Jim Czarnek (134 lb), Jim McCarville (137 lb), Jim Rademacher (149 lb) and Jack Kuta (160 lb) all won matches in last weekend’s smoker. The “best fight of the night” was the bout between Jim Rademacher and Norm Jensen.

Loup City High School freshman Carolyn Hensley was first and Carol Epley was second in the annual American Legion Oratorical Contest.

Ray Trompke has purchased a 2,100-pound yellow coated “Senior Herd” Hereford named “M. Baldwin 881.”
